Being a Councillor

The Council has a vacancy for a Councillor. Would you be interested in becoming a Councillor but are not sure what would be required of you?

I (Andi) have been a Town Councillor for nearly a decade (and a District Councillor for four years). In that time I have been elected (fought an election), elected (unopposed) and Co-Opted (no election, just chosen by the Council). The Council will be Co-Opting a new Councillor at its September meeting, so if you want to be a Councillor, now is the time.

We hold 11 monthly Council meetings (2nd Monday of each month except August). These meetings are at 7pm and are held at the Community Centre. As a Councillor you are expected to attend these meetings (and can be removed from the Council if you miss 6 months of meetings).

Other than the meetings, the amount of time you want to put into the role, depends entirely up to you. If you want to get involved with progressing Council projects, you can. We provide “New Councillor” training, so you understand what the legal role of the Council is. We also offer ongoing training in whatever aspects of the Council’s role that you want to understand further.

The Council’s office support the work of the Council, so when you are doing something for the Council, we (Andi and Tanya) may be able to help you. In addition, the other 11 Councillors will be happy and willing to help you settle in and become a key member of the Council and the community.
