This winter the Parish Council have taken over the Community Centre to provide a Warm Space for local residents. It is still available to hire at weekends or evenings (or from next Easter), just scroll down the page past the Warm Space poster for more information.
The Parish Council is delighted to announce that we have been successful in a grant application to North Devon Council. This grant will help us to provide a Warm Space at the Community Centre this winter.
The Community Centre will be OPEN TO ALL, free of charge, through the daytime, this winter, as a warm space for anyone who wants to come and not have to heat their own house through the day. As well as a warm space (with a mix of comfy chairs, tables and chairs, and sofas) we will be making the kitchen available for making hot and cold drinks (tea, coffee, orange squash, etc provided). The grant will also allow us to have a TV screen set up, showing kids TV to help occupy our younger visitors. We also have free WIFI within the building, should you want to access the internet on your own device.
This Warm Space will operate alongside the Senior Citizens group, who have their own room in the Community Centre so more mature visitors to the Community Centre will also be able to see what that group gets up to and potentially join in with their sessions when they run.
The Community Centre is the former Primary School in the village and when it was no longer needed as a school, Devon County Council passed the stewardship of the building to the Parish Council so that it could be used for community benefit. The Parish Council now operate out of the Community Centre and one of the other rooms is on a long-term hire to the Senior Citizens group who regularly use their room for coffee mornings and social get togethers. The Community Centre is located on Church Street, so right in the heart of the village and a short level walk away from “Cormelles” pay and display car park.
The main part of the Community Centre (which is available to hire) is made up of two inter-connecting rooms with an adjoining kitchen. These rooms are ideal for a variety of uses – from children’s birthday parties, company conferences / staff meetings, training sessions, keep fit classes, in fact the list is almost endless!
The Community Centre benefits from having free wifi throughout, projector screens / equipment, numerous tables and chairs, fully fitted kitchen, wheelchair access, disabled toilets and an enclosed outdoor area, meaning that we can cater for most groups or hirer requirements. We charge a straight forward fee of £8 per hour normally and £10 per hour if you need the heating turned on! If you have any queries please contact the Parish Council office 0n 01271 883403.
